A namakarana (naming ceremony) is traditionally held on the 11th, 12th or 21st day, or a later auspicious date your priest confirms. Plan a 60–90 minute ritual with cradle ceremony, followed by a traditional meal. Beyond 50–60 guests, a hall beats home: catering, parking and a feeding room solve themselves. Budget ₹60,000–₹2 lakh for 100–250 guests.
The naming ceremony is the first time the extended family formally meets the newest member — a ritual morning with a pooja, a cradle, whispered names and one very unbothered baby. Here is how to host it so the new parents enjoy it too.
The ritual morning, sequenced
- Ganapathi pooja and punyahavachana (purification) — priest-led, 30–40 minutes
- Cradle ceremony: the decorated cradle, baby placed by grandmothers, lullabies sung
- The naming: father whispers the chosen name in the baby’s ear (traditions vary — your priest leads)
- Blessings: elders bless with rice and flowers; gifts and gold presented
- The meal: a full traditional lunch — this is where a venue kitchen earns its keep
Total ritual time is usually 60–90 minutes. Schedule the pooja start with your priest around the baby’s morning nap, and keep a feeding/changing room steps from the mandap.
Home or hall?
- Under 50–60 guests: home works, if someone else handles catering and cleanup
- Above that, a hall solves everything at once: parking for elders, catering for 200, a proper cradle-stage for photos, and no post-event house recovery with a newborn
- Ask the venue for: pooja/havan permission, a private feeding room, elder-friendly seating near the ritual, and banana-leaf or buffet lunch service
- Morning slots (8am–1pm) price gently — this is not a wedding-scale booking and should not be quoted like one
